Filing Speech This election occurs at a critical time in Durham’s history. For the city of Durham is at a crossroads. We can either continue down then path we’re currently on, and come to be known solely for our crime statistics; to be the place to come for drugs, guns, and gangs, or we can strike out on a new path. We can stand up for what is ours, we can fight to take our city back, we can restore law and order, and once again be known as the city of medicine, the place to be for art, architecture, excellent educational institutions, fine dining, and great shopping. The place where each person’s voice is heard, no matter what sex, no matter what race, no matter what level of income. The place where each one of us can, and does, truly make a difference. The decision is up to us, the citizens of Durham. We alone decide who to elect to serve us, to protect us, and to lead us. And this year’s election for District Court Judge is the most important one ever. For the courthouse is the place of last resort. Where disputes can be settled, battles can be ended, and peace can be restored. But for law and order to reign, we have to have judges that know the law, respect the law, and are not afraid to uphold the law, to keep our streets safe. We have to have judges that know when to be tough, and when to show compassion. We have to have judges that know when to give a second chance, and when to lock them up and throw away the key. As the only candidate who has been in our courtrooms every day, for the past 11 years, I am the person for that job. We need to get tough on crime, but we must also offer alternatives to a life of crime. It’s not enough to just lock them up, we must also prepare them for a life once they get out. And we have to show them other ways to make a living, to gain respect, pride, and acceptance. We can’t just carry a stick, we must also bring a carrot. And it takes a great deal of knowledge, skill, and experience to know when to use which. Vote for Shannon Tucker for district court judge on May 2nd, and I will lead the way, back to law and order. |
